Before and After Closet Shelves in a Vintage Trailer

I’m trying to get several projects done this weekend and wanted to share this one with you all. I decided that we could use some shelves in the closet. You can never have too many shelves.  We have one of those hanging closet organizers in this closet but I also really wanted some stationary ones for food and or more clothes storage.

So off to the hardware store I went to see what options were available. The challenge with this closet is the width is only 21 inches. So I had to get something that could be cut to the right size. I didn’t want to go with wood due to the added weight so instead I went with a wire shelving unit like the ones you see people use in their closets at home. I also chose the ones with a taller lip at the front so things would sit more secure on there. Of course during traveling nothing will be on the shelves.

Here is the closet before:

And here is what they look like after:

What I found most challenging with this was finding screws that were just the right length. If you get them too long you’ll end up punching through the outer skin of the trailer. That would NOT be good! I held my breath the entire time putting the screws in and walked outside several times to make sure I wasn’t punching through the skin….WHEW!

  1. why do you leave them empty to travel? make some shelf ‘shades’ that you clip (think carabeener or thumblatch) to the top and bottom. stiffly woven fabric, a channel at top and bottom for dowels, cut circle holes on sides and middle for the clip to attach the dowels to the shelves. easy, cheap and no moving stuff around. when parked, lift/lower shade and clip dowels together.

    • Good idea! Actually what I have in there now I plan on changing and putting in some actual wood shelving. I’d like to go one step further and get the pull out kind. The kind that you see in kitchens where the base is on little wheels and the bottoms slid out. One project at a time though (:

    • Would love to see what you mean in a rudimentary drawing. I can’t visualize and would really like to see it

  2. So what length screws did you use?

    • Betsy, I can’t recall off hand the size of screws but I do know that they were very short as I didn’t want to screw all the way through the skin.
