Inside of the 1955 Bellwood

OK, so I got a bit snap happy and wanted to share some pictures with you all. I completed the dinette seat covers and while they aren’t perfect, they will do the trick for now. I also appliqued a couple pillows I picked up with “J” and “B” (for those that don’t know…those stand for her name; Jelly Bean). I haven’t decided if I like them with the letters on there or not. They are pretty stark white without the letters and I was trying to give them a bit of color. I think I accomplished that part but just not sure if I like it. I’ll use them for a bit and if I decide I don’t like them I’ll take the letters off and do something else.

It’s a challenge taking photos in such a small space. What I did to get these pictures is I used my fish-eye filter lense on my camera to get a wider/longer shot.

I’m currently waiting on a custom made stove top cover and when that arrives I’ll take some pictures to show you. I love having a stove top cover. Not only does it give you more counter space but it also protects the top of the stove. I just love the bed. It has the original mattress on there and a 4 inch memory foam topper on top of that. It makes for a super comfortable bed! The yellow hammock you see above the bed we won’t use quite yet. I vision my 3 year old rolling out of it so maybe when he’s a bit older he can use it.

While I still have a number of things I want to do (ie; add a sheer curtain for across the bed area, install a 12 v system for running a fan and lights, etc.,) she’s basically ready for her first camping trip later this month. I can’t wait!!

Jelly bean is adorable! You’ve done a great job fixing her up.

  2. I love JellyBean! She is just adorable. We are looking for an older small camper with real wood interior – hard to find! I don’t usually voice an opinion but I’m not sure that I like the pillows with the letters… just sayin! If she were mine – as is – I would think about denim pillows. Or maybe a large faded blue denim pillow and a small red checked pillow? I just love the sack curtains. Nice touch!

    • Thank you Merideth (:

Janice, all comments/opinions are always welcome here. I think the red is a bit too loud of a red or something. I wish it was more of a worn, faded red if that makes sense. I might have to see what I can do to tone it down a bit.

  3. I think JellyBean looks wonderful. Love the real wood and your choice of materials. The blue in the curtains would be a really nice accent as well. I am working on our old RV (not vintage)and used soft aqua, red and white. Hope you will post more pictures as you go along, thank you for sharing.

  4. Perfect! Don’t change a thing!

Very cute…love the sack curtains. The inside looks like my 1954 Ideal.

  6. SHE LOOKS FANTASTIC KELLE

Oooooooo, I just adore Jelly Bean! I love everything about her! If you find after awhile you don’t care for the pillows, maybe just a white pillow with red ball fringe? Or even blue ball fringe? I know you will enjoy your first camping trip!

  8. wowzers, that looks amazing!!!! You’ve done a great job with this little beauty. Looking forward to seeing (even) more ^-^

Looks amazing!! I was hoping you might talk a little bit about how you got the woodwork so nice & shiny? Share your secret!

Jelly Bean is adorable! I think the pillows are okay but just missing something. If you could applique something out of blue fabric like the blue in the curtains I think they would be super cute and look more like they belong. Maybe a square around them or some blue stars would work. Have fun deciding.

  12. loving your bellwood photos!!! I have a ’55 Bellwood named Miss Trixie Belle and its awesome to see another one out there.

  13. I love the camper! I was wondering about your yellow hammock. Did you install that? I want something just like that for the future and was wondering if I have to make it myself or if you can buy them. Thanks!! Love the potato sack curtains!

    • Hi Dena, the hammock and poles are original. If you trailer doesn’t have them you can always make one. You’d have to get some really heavy duty steel poles in order to hold the weight of a child cut to length. Then you could use heavy canvas material to make the bunk. You can see the one I made for our Compact here: http://littlevintagetrailer.com/2011/07/new-canvas-bunk-for-61-shasta-compact/ The poles were already there but the canvas that was on there was very old and frayed so I opted to sew a new one.

  14. Thanks so much. I am completely re doing and old 14 ft Layton Camper. I don’t even know what year it is, but I am gutting it and doing it my way. It’s in pretty bad shape currently. Anyway, while I was searching around for something like that hammock bed, I found this guy’s tutorial, which looks decent. Thanks for your reply!

  15. Jelly Bean is beautiful! I love the sack curtains and her wood is stunning! Can I ask how you attach the lower edge of the curtain by the bed? I am getting ready to make curtains from vintage barkcloth for my 1955 Siest and am not sure how to attach that bottom edge. The curve of the trailer by the bed won’t let the curtains lay flat. I love your blog!

  16. Hi Diane,

Thank you. Glad you like her (: That curtain is attached with a rod just like the top one. It has brackets on each end and the rod slips into them. So basically you are adding a rod at the top and one at the bottom. Here is a picture of the rod and I apologize for it being so tiny but it’s the closest I could find. It’s the middle rod in the photo. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5yEnFF5GQeA/S-6BH1TLN6I/AAAAAAAABcs/6voSS0ra3Fs/s320/sash_spring_tension.jpg By adding the rod to the bottom your curtains will lay flat like you see mine are. I hope that helps.

  17. Just adorable!. What is the brand name of the little stove? I am looking for something similar. Thanks
    Lauren

  18. Your trailer is configured much like our 1956 Scotsman. Your decorating taste is inspirational.

What a lovely camper! Like the way you ‘beefed up’ the bed, when you get to a certain age like the hubs and I, you need a comfy place to sleep at night:) Thanks for sharing.

I have a 1955 Siest. Its so no e to see your pics of what my interior should look like. Is that the original stove and sink? I’m trying to reflect its history in my restoration. It was gutted and redone poorly. I’m trying to make it adorable again.

I’d love more pics and info….

  21. When I was a kid, my dad had one of these. We used to either leave it by the river or take it to an old gravel pit that was owned by the family since the early 1900’s to camp out of. If I recall correctly, the lamps in it were propane and not electric. I used to always sleep in the canvas cot-bunk. We never towed more than a few miles, just to use it as a shelter when were doing lake/river stuff when we were young.

Fast forward into adulthood, my older sister talks him into giving it to her with the intent of refreshing it and using it. About 13 years ago, her and her husband got divorced and when she left, she left the trailer there with him 🙁

She said that she was only able to pack up her stuff into her car and couldn’t take it with her at the time. I reminded her that she had no less than 5 siblings that wither had trucks or had access to one.

I had a very lucid dream last night that I owned it and my two sons and I were camping in it. I was on the double in the back, the 11 year old on the dinette fold down my 4 year old on the canvas cot-bunk in the rear. That dream is what brought me to this page today. Although I am unable to pass my memories down to the next generation, it brings joy to my heart to see that you are able to.
